Ripon City are on red alert for a goalkeeper after number one Matt Shaw was ruled out for the majority of the season.

Shaw injured his knee during the Whitworth Cup penalty shoot-out victory over neighbours Kirkby Malzeard last week.

Consultation has since showed that the ‘keeper has sustained cartilage damage and he is awaiting further diagnosis.

Assistant boss Dan Metcalfe could step in between the sticks in Saturday’s must-win clash at fellow relegation candidates Leeds Modernians.

However, both he and boss Mick Baldwin were searching for a long term answer.

Metcalfe said: “It’s always a position we have struggled with. Matt was a breath of fresh air and has never let us down so it’s been a bit of a sickener.

“We need to see if we can get hold of a keeper. I know Micky is working hard to get one in.”

City’s bottom of the table clash at Thornhill was postponed on Saturday due to the weather. But Metcalfe was confident the good state of their home pitch at Mallorie Park would allow for action this weekend.

Paul Abbott, Danny Edmunds, Jamie Stewart and captain Ryan Barker should be available.

“It’s a vital that we get three points,” added Metcalfe added.
