We’re still on course says Town boss Weaver

“We could have won 7-1!” – that was the verdict of Harrogate Town boss Simon Weaver after he saw his side slip to a shock 2-1 home defeat against Alfreton on Saturday.

The result was only fifth-placed Harrogate’s second home defeat of the season in the league and Weaver is keen to take the positives from the performance.

“We played well but lacked a finishing touch,” he said.

“They (Alfreton) scored an incredible goal from a free-kick, rode their luck a little bit and got the win.

“It was just one of those days,” he added. “In terms of creating chances, we were far superior to them.

“I’ve watched the game back twice now and I could only see a few small things we could possibly improve on.

“Our last two games have probably been up there with best two performances of the year and Saturday wasn’t much different – we’ve played worse this year and won.

“On another day, we could have won 7-1. It was a frustrating result and the fans understood that. They weren’t annoyed, they were just frustrated like ourselves.

“Alfreton’s staff said we were the best team they’ve played against, so it was a frustrating day but we’re not concerned, the effort was certainly there.

“I was really pleased with the performance overall. We played some slick, attacking stuff and we’re still feeling confident.”

The 37-year-old is now preparing his side for a trip to 20th-placed Corby, where he will face a former team-mate in the opposing dugout in the form of ex-Premier League striker Tommy Wright, who enjoyed a six-game spell with Town under former player-coach Weaver two years ago.

“Tommy is a good, honest football man who will have his lads ready for us.

“They’ve got some good players and they’re probably a bit unlucky to be where they are in the league, but we want to keep our good away record up and we’ll set up to win the game. It’s a long week after a defeat, especially like we had on Saturday, but we’ll attack like we always do with two wingers and I’m confident we can come away with the points.

“The lads’ fitness since the Grimsby game in the FA Cup has been brilliant, so I’m sure we’ll get back on our game soon.”

Weaver confirmed star striker Brendon Daniels, winner of the club’s Player of the Month award for October, will have ‘extra treatment’ for an as-yet unknown injury which forced him off on Saturday, while he revealed a swollen ankle means Danny Ellis won’t train this week, but the Town chief is hopeful of having both players available for the weekend.
