Lloyd Kerry's 69th-minute goal cancelled out James Vaughan's opener before the Wetherby Road outfit went on to hold their nerve in a thrilling shoot-out.
Here's a look at how Simon Weaver's men performed during their first-ever 90 minutes as a Football League club.

Hide AdJoe Cracknell 8 - Collecting two early crosses into his box with ease will have helped settle any nerves he may have been feeling on a rare competitive start. Wasn't seriously tested during the 90 minutes and although he twice spilled the ball late on, he more than redeemed himself with a couple of good saves during the penalty shoot-out.
Ryan Fallowfield 7 - Picked up where he left off in the play-off final at Wembley with a first-half display that oozed class and featured two back-heels. Solid defensively and excellent on the ball for the most part, there were a couple of lapses after the break, including an under-hit back-pass which gifted Rovers their goal.
Will Smith 8 - ADVERTISER STAR MAN. Seemed to relish his tussle with ex-Premier League striker James Vaughan during a near-faultless first-half showing. Read the game superbly, won his headers, made a crucial block to deny Kieron Morris and almost set up a goal for Jack Muldoon with one burst forwards.
Connor Hall 8 - Pretty much cruised through the opening 45 and looked in control at the heart of the Harrogate back-four. Was playing in the sixth tier less 16 months ago, but looked very much at home in an all-League Two clash.

Hide AdWarren Burrell 7 - Like the rest of his defensive colleagues, Town's left-back was very comfortable in his defensive duties and also on the ball.
George Thomson 7 - Neat and tidy on the right wing - the area of the field from which Town looked at their most dangerous. It was his pass that set Lloyd Kerry up for the equalising goal.
Josh Falkingham 8 - More than matched experienced former Liverpool schemer Jay Spearing in the centre of the park. Passed well, including one stunning eye-of-the-needle through-ball and came close with a long-range strike. Netted the decisive spot-kick.
Lloyd Kerry 7 - Started okay but was guilty of a couple of loose passes as the opening period wore on. Wasn't at his best during the early stages of the second half either, though it was he who netted Town's all-important equaliser.

Hide AdTom Walker 6 - Skinned Lee O'Connor early on with a lovely bit of skill and showed a couple of nice touches down the left without really being able to influence proceedings as much as he would have hoped to.
Aaron Martin 7 - Worked so hard off the ball and competed well both on the deck and in the air against Tranmere's gigantic centre-half Manny Monthe, whom he twice stole the ball from. Didn't carry too much of a goal-threat, however.
Jack Muldoon 8 - Caused Tranmere some issues with his clever movement and willingness to run. Produced two crosses that were begging to be finished off and also threatened himself with a couple of decent second-half shots.
