Nowakowski said he had made the “hard decision several months ago”.

The popular figure, whose son Adam remains a key part of Town’s midfield, has also left his role as chairman of the club’s community foundation.

Nowakowski said: “As with anything, these decisions can sometimes take a while to become reality through various processes.

“It has been a privilege being involved with the club since Irving Weaver took over. I have every confidence in the club moving forwards and in the right direction whilst he is in charge. You only have to look around the stadium to see what advancements have been made.”

Nowakowski joined the board of directors in June 2011 when Weaver took over the club.

Whilst at the club he championed a link-up with charity RwandaChild which saw a choir from the African country perform at half-time against Barrow in April.

A statement put on the Town website yesterday afternoon said Nowakowski had been instrumental in rebuilding the links with the community.

It read: “The club are obviously very sad to lose Tad from its board of directors but respect his wishes.”
