Sunday league match abandoned after referee punched by player in Wetherby

A football match in Wetherby was brought to an early halt on Sunday morning after the referee was punched by a player.

Referee Chris Hynes abandoned the Claro League clash between Wetherby Athletic and Harrogate side Showbiz Whites after he was attacked by a visiting player, believed to be Kevin Morris.

Hynes was said to be “very shaken” with a “very sore head”.

An Under-17s junior match was taking place on the adjacent pitch on the Ings, Wetherby and an Under-9s girls match had just finished.

Athletic were leading 7-1 midway through the second half when the match was brought to an end.

A tweet from the Wetherby Athletic account read: “Match abandoned here at Wetherby. Referee punched and assaulted by Showbiz Whites player. #horrible”

Following the match, the referee called the police and officers attended Wetherby Sports Association shortly after noon.
The Claro League posted a statement on its website on Monday which said: “All please note. Kevin Morris, a player from Showbiz Whites, is not welcome in our league.”
