'Remarkable' Irving Weaver appointed Harrogate Town Life President following completion of takeover
New Harrogate Town co-owner Jonathan Blezard paid a glowing tribute to Irving Weaver as he announced that the club’s “remarkable” outgoing chairman had been appointed to the role of Life President.
It was confirmed on Friday that local businessman Blezard and existing Sulphurites first-team manager Simon Weaver had completed their takeover of the National League outfit.

The pair’s acquisition of the club brings to an end a successful decade and a half under the stewardship of Irving Weaver, who replaced Bill Fotherby as majority shareholder at Wetherby Road in 2011.
Weaver Sr invested heavily in Town, transforming their home ground, while also overseeing two historic promotions, an FA trophy win at Wembley, and six seasons in the Football League.
And Harrogate’s new chairman said that it was only right that his predecessor’s achievements during his 15 years at the helm were immediately recognised.
“One of the first things Simon and I wanted to do following completion was to ensure that Irving’s contribution to Harrogate Town was recognised appropriately in a meaningful and lasting way,” Blezard said.
“What Irving has achieved here is remarkable. He took a small football club and, through years of personal commitment, determination and investment, helped take it to heights that few could have imagined.
“It is a privilege to appoint Irving as Life President, and on behalf of everyone associated with the Club, I would like to thank him for everything he has done.
“Having spent a great deal of time with Irving over the past year, I have come to understand just how much this football club means to him, and how much of himself he has put into it.
“I have enormous respect for what Irving has achieved and feel a real responsibility to protect and build upon his legacy.”
Blezard went on to stress that although Weaver Sr has stepped down from his role as chairman and relinquished his majority shareholding, he will remain very much involved behind the scenes at the Marcy Fitness Stadium.
“After 15 years of carrying the responsibility of ownership and leadership, Irving has more than earned the opportunity to enjoy a well-deserved retirement and savour watching the football as a supporter.
“But, retirement certainly doesn’t mean goodbye; Irving will remain a valued presence around the club, and I will personally welcome the opportunity to continue drawing on his experience, knowledge and advice as we take Harrogate Town forward.”
