And manager Paul Beesley hailed the result as “very important” in putting some distance between the Locomotives and the NCEL Premier Division relegation zone.

“It was a game that we had to win otherwise we could have found ourselves getting dragged back into the scrap at the bottom of the table,” he added.

Retford were not far behind us in the standings going into the game and the players realised the importance of getting a result and they went out and played well.

“We passed the ball, created lots of chances and could have scored more than five.

“Retford had a few players missing, which obviously helped, but I’m pleased with how the lads went about things. We were much the better side and produced a good all-round team performance.”

Chris Ovington gave Railway the lead with just eight minutes on the clock when he controlled the ball and fired home his sixth goal of the campaign.

Jordan Hendrie doubled the advantage on the 20-minute mark, getting forward from right-back to send a loose ball into the back of the net following good work by Fraser Hansen down the left flank.

Seven minutes before the interval top-scorer Stephen Bromley took the score to 3-0 with a neat finish on the turn after a useful run by Hendrie.

Man of the match Hendrie was the provider once again when David Brown bagged Rail’s fourth in the 73rd minute, and just moments later Lewis Riley added number five via the underside of the visitors’ crossbar.

Chris Fisher had the chance to increase the margin of victory late on, but his penalty was saved by the Retford keeper.

Railway now sit 17th in the league standings, 12 points clear of the relegation places.
