NCEL: Ormsby double makes it a Sonny day for Tadcaster Albion

Tadcaster Albion claimed an emotionally charged victory over struggling Liversedge on a poignant afternoon at the i2i Stadium.

Liam Ormsby scored from two set pieces as Albion made hard work of a 4-1 win over the bottom side in Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

Striker Carl Stewart also ended a year-long goal drought and Jimmy Beadle headed home late on to deny the plucky visitors.

The victory marked the end of a touching week for the club following the death of popular barmaid Sonny Lang and the erection of the footbridge across the River Wharfe nicknamed in her honour.

Sonny lost her battle against Cystic Fibrosis at the age of 23 and her passing was recognised by supporters, players and other clubs alike.

Both captains presented a bunch of flowers to Sonny's mum Anna-Marie Clark while the ground joined together for a minute's applause before kick-off.

Perhaps the emotions made for a scrappy opening to the game, with Albion enjoying better possession but ending frustrated.

Captain Jimmy Beadle was thwarted with a first minute strike before blazing Josh Barrett's cross high over the bar and heading Jonathan Greening's cross at 'Sedge keeper Christian Thewlis.

Liversedge were good for the stalemate as they contained their high-flying hosts despite their lowly league position.

But Albion struck a sucker-punch on the stroke of the break.

One free-kick too many allowed Ormsby a strike at goal on the stroke of half time and his set-piece delivery curled expertly into the top corner. The midfielder, filling in at left-back to cover the injured Dan Clayton, pointed pertinently to the sky in Sonny's honour.

Tad should have been two ahead soon after the interval but Stewart, who last scored at Retford on January 27, 2015, wasted a glorious one on one opportunity as he struck tamely at Thewlis.

Liversedge made him pay as Tom Jackson swept in a glorious free-kick from the right flank, hooping into the far corner round Gary Stevens.

Stewart was increasingly growing into the game on his return to the starting line-up and his run down the right forced a crucial penalty kick on the hour mark.

His attempted cross slapped straight into Tom Brook's palm and gave Ormsby the chance to retake Tad's lead. His effort was stopped by a firm Thewlis hand but the ball presented itself kindly for Ormsby to follow up.

Despite their lead, Albion looked shaky under a Liversedge spell of pressure and Stevens had to make two fine saves to deny Brandon Kane and Rhys Davis - one tipping the ball onto the crossbar and over for a corner.

At the other end, Adam Baker almost prodded home with his first touch before Stewart's first time follow-up was seemingly stopped by Thewlis' glove outside of the are.

But in the final five minutes, Albion did secure the three points and their share of topspot in the table.

Having let his frustration show on other occasions, Stewart finally grabbed his opportunity to strike with a cool finish in off the far post on 86 minutes. A roar of celebration followed from the striker, and perhaps an even greater one from the dugout.

Beadle then wrapped up the win as he climbed highest from a Conor Sellars corner to thump in his 16th of the campaign.

It was the eighth game in succession for Tad to score exactly four goals at home but Ormsby could have changed that in injury time.

After Baker was cynically scythed down racing through, the left-back's resultant free-kick was palmed away by Thewlis low down.
