Harrogate Railway made the perfect start to 2014 by beating relegation troubled Wakefield 3-2 away in Evo Stik First Division North.

Prolific striker Nathan Cartman bagged a brace as Billy Miller’s men held off a brave fightback from the hosts to claim three points.

Veteran winger Col Hunter also scored his third goal in a week for Railway.

Cartman opened the scoring from close range after three minutes before Hunter doubled the lead before half-time.

Dave Boardman’s 12 minute double then brought the hosts level after the restart.

But Railway earned the spoils when Cartman finished off Dan Thirkell’s through ball.

The three points lifted Railway up to 11th. Miller’s men next travel to Lancaster City on Saturday.

City beat Railway 3-1 at Station View in September.

Harrogate Town’s clash at Guiseley was postponed.
