Wood has arrived for a fee which will rise to £3m, with the 23-year-old undergoing a medical yesterday after Leeds agreed a deal with Leicester.

New Zealand international Wood had also been the subject of interest from Wolves, but the Midlanders pulled out of the race last night, viewing the fee to be too high for them.

Leicester City's Chris Wood.

Leeds head coach Uwe Rosler has spoken of his delight at the capture of Wood, who has considerable Championship experience with the likes of Leicester, Millwall and Birmingham City.

He said: “He is another important piece in the jigsaw. We were looking for a number nine type – like Chris Wood is.

“He’s physical, strong and experienced in this league. He has the potential to develop and has best years in front of him.

“This was a very tough one because there was a lot of competition. It was not easy to get it over the line.”

Tweeting his thoughts, Wood said: “Delighted to say that I am a @LUFC player! Can’t wait to get started & join in with the lads. Looking forward to a great season ahead.”

Wood becomes United’s fourth arrival of the summer, following the signings of defender Sol Bamba, striker Lee Erwin and young goalkeeper Charlie Horton.
