The forward joined Town from Conference side Mansfield Town in the summer and he had previously enjoyed a prolific spell at Wrexham.

However, the 28-year-old suffered an early set-back at Town when he was sidelined in pre-season a leg injury.

Since returning, he has yet to register in the Vanarama Conference North but he scored his first Town goal against Stockport County in the FA Cup earlier this month.

Despite missing two months of action, he has still set sights on a 20-goal haul.

Speight said: “The last two times I have set myself the target I have reached it. For a striker, 20 goals has to be the aim. I’ve had the ability to score goals wherever I have been so I definitely think I can get to 20 again.”

Ashley Worsfold has been cleared to start training following his pre-season leg break and he should return to pressure Speight and James Walshaw by the New Year.

Boss Simon Weaver said: “There’s no specific targets for them. It’s just fill your boots and see how many you can get.
“If we can get a run of games into them, that’s all we’ve ever wanted. With Ashley coming back and Ryan Kendall you have got a great strikeforce.”

Despite his goal glut so far, Speight is enjoying life at Town and believes an upcurve in results is imminent.

“Everything is brilliant behind the scenes,” he added. “I have been at non-league clubs that aren’t run as good as this.

“It’s down to the lads now. All the lads want to push for the club, the chairman, the gaffer and Macca. The squad we have could compete in the Conference. It’s a great squad it just needs to click.”
