Crook was at fault to gift former York City striker Darryn Stamp a winning goal for Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday as Town went down 2-1.

The goalkeeper has held the number one shirt at the CNG Stadium since displacing Phil Barnes 12 months ago, and put a year studying in the United States on hold to remain at the club over the summer.

Weaver insisted he had full confidence in Crook, who signed for the club in 2013 before spending a season on a dual registration at Harrogate Railway.

“He has all the talent in the world,” said the boss.

“You see young keepers at the highest level, like Joe Hart, where they have to learn to progress. Part of that can happen through moments where it doesn’t go for you.

“Peter was a little bit unfortunate and he only has a couple of aspects to work on.

“Mostly it’s just his vocal side. That’s what’s required if he is to go on to better levels.

“That’s what I think he can do. He can go on and play a few levels up.
“He has the physical ingredients and he has the hunger as well.

“He is one of the few young goalkeepers of the modern breed that comes out and claims crosses. Most of them are just good shot stoppers.”
