Harrogate Town’s fifth outing of pre-season saw them suffer their first defeat, a 2-1 reverse at the hands of Evo-Stik League Premier Division newboys Scarborough Athletic.

The Seadogs began Tuesday evening’s game at the CNG Stadium strongly with ex-Town winger Wayne Brooksby causing some early problems and it took a quarter of an hour before the hosts threatened.

Jack Muldoon advanced forwards before picking out George Thomson on the edge of the area, but he dragged his strike wide of the mark.

Boro then took the lead with 33 minutes on the clock, Michael Coulson teeing up Nathan Valentine to finish from six yards out.

Falling behind stung Town into action, and just four minutes later, Aaron Williams converted Thomson’s inviting, driven cross at the back post for 1-1.

Thomson then saw a sweetly-struck shot tipped away by visiting stopper Tommy Taylor, and the sides went into the break on terms.

Just eight minutes after the resumption, Boro were back ahead as James Walshaw – another ex-Town player – smashed a strike past Joe Cracknell and into the bottom corner having been played in by Coulson.

Town pressed for a second equaliser, but the closest they came was when Dominic Knowles was thwarted by Taylor when clean through on goal, and the visitors were able to see the game out.

Next up for Simon Weaver’s team is a trip to Welsh Premier League outfit Cefn Druids on Saturday, 2.30pm kick-off.
