Town suffer first defeat of season as Salford take the points

Harrogate Town suffered a first defeat of the season on Tuesday evening, going down 2-1 at home to Salford City.

Simon Weaver’s men trailed for almost the entirety of the first half after Michael Phenix’s second-minute opener, though the hosts looked a different side after the break and levelled in the 47th minute via Joe Leesley’s penalty.

Town appeared the more likely to go on and claim a winner, but it was Salford who snatched all three points through Louis Maynard’s late goal, knocking Harrogate off the top of National League North in the process.

Weaver’s team made the worst possible start to the evening, conceding early on as Richard Allen sent a cleared corner back into a good area where Phenix was able to scramble home.

This setback looked to have rocked Town, who did well to survive a couple of nervy moments at the back as City applied the pressure.

Town’s main threat was coming from Jordan Thewlis, whose pace in behind was troubling the Ammies’ but it was the visitors who had the best chance to net the second goal of the night when Allen blazed over from eight yards out just before half-time.

Jack Emmett then countered and went almost the length of the field and teed up Thomson who was denied by a Max Crocombe save.

Town were level shortly after the resumption as Joe Leesley picked out the top corner of the net from the penalty spot after Ryan Fallowfield’s cross was handled.

They had the ball in the net again before the hour-mark as sub Jake Wright struck, only to be ruled offside.

Thewlis and Wright both went close to putting their side in front, but despite the hosts being firmly on the front foot, Salford re-took the lead with 13 minutes to go when captain Maynard headed down into the net unmarked from a corner.

Emmett was then denied by gloveman Crocombe as Town went in search of an equaliser, but one was not forthcoming.

Next up for the Sulphurites is a trip to AFC Telford United on Saturday, 3pm kick-off.
