Harrogate Town still in play-off tie insists captain Ellis

Town went down to a single goal defeat against AFC Fylde in the National League North play-off first leg at the CNG Stadium.

“It's half time but we are going to be positive going over there,” Ellis said.

“We have created some good chances and were unfortunate not to score tonight.

“To be fair to them, they had their chances as well. Crooky made some great saves but we are still well in this tie.”

Ellis tasted success in the play-offs with Guiseley 12 months ago and has been a stalwart in the Town defence all campaign.

However, he was left on the floor as leading marksmen Danny Rowe got in behind Town for the winning goal.

But despite at uphill challenge ahead for Sunday's reverse fixture on the west coast, the skipper believes the tie remains in the balance.

Ellis said: “We are still positive. It's only 1-0. If it was two or three more, you would be worrying but with it only being one we are still in this race.

“The gaffer is always putting confidence into us. It's not over yet.

“We just have to tighten up on a few areas. We were defensively out of shape at times. The movement were quite good so we need to work on that and the movement around the box.”

Crook claimed the man of the match award for an outstanding performance in the Town goal, pulling off a crucial double save in the opening minutes before adding several other stops to his collection.

Ellis said: “He's a rock. Tonight he was superb.

“From the first minute when he pulled off a great save from a rebounded shot, and then got the header at the back stick.

“You're always confident with someone like Crooky behind you.”
