Twenty-year-old Heffernan, a 20-year-old Republic of Ireland international and former captain of the Magpies’ reserve team, arrived on Thursday on an 18-month contract.

Earlier in the day, fellow centre-half Headman, 20, has also put pen to paper on a deal that runs until the summer of 2027. Both men are available for selection when Town visit fellow strugglers Shrewsbury this Saturday.

On what Heffernan will add to Harrogate’s defensive ranks, Head of Recruitment Lloyd Kerry said: “He's energetic, puts his body on the line, he'll put his head in where it hurts and he's mobile, we like all aspects of his game.

“He's a real competitor. He was captain for the under-21s at Newcastle, so has obviously got good leadership qualities.

“He’s exactly what we’re looking for in a centre-half, so hopefully he can come in, hit the ground running and push the other lads on as well.”

Born in Cork, Heffernan began his career with Ringmahon Rangers, before moving to Cork City in 2019.

Prior to his turning professional at Cork, he trained with Juventus, Roma, Atalanta and AC Milan, with the Rossoneri securing the talented defender’s signature, in 2022.

A year later Heffernan would make to move to England and Newcastle United, where he made more than 50 Premier League Two appearances.

“I'm buzzing,” Heffernan said. “It's a massive move for me and my family and will be my first taste of men's football, so I'm just really excited to get going.

“All the experiences in my career so far have been leading to this moment now, so if I can take all of that and put it together, then I think it'll give me a good shot.

“I'm grateful to the club for taking me here, this is a massive opportunity for me and I’m determined to repay the faith.”

Headman joined Brentford in February 2023 from Walton & Hersham, developing into a key figure for the club’s ‘B’ Team.

The imposing six-foot-four defender spent the last month on loan at Maidenhead, scoring his first professional goal against Hampton & Richmond.

“At 20-years old, we think he is mentally ready and physically ready to come in, compete in League Two and make a big impact.” Kerry added.

“Injuries have left us a little light at centre-half, so when we the opportunity presented itself it was a no-brainer, and we’re excited by what Chanse can bring.

“He’s really mobile and we like all the attributes he's got, he has shown in a short spell at Maidenhead that in men's football that he can really compete physically.”

The duo follow fellow defender Grant Horton, goalkeeper Henry Gray and striker Emile Acquah into Wetherby Road after the opening of the January transfer window.
