Harrogate Town can start looking upwards rather than over their shoulders following win at Crawley Town

George Thomson believes that Harrogate Town can now start looking at how high up the League Two standings they can finish rather than worrying about a survival scrap.

The Sulphurites recorded back-to-back victories for the first time since October on Saturday, following up last weekend's 2-1 home win over Newport County with a fine 3-1 success at Crawley Town.

And their most recent triumph, which came about courtesy of first-half strikes from Aaron Martin, Josh March and Simon Power, saw Simon Weaver's team climb six places in the table.

This means that Harrogate now sit in 14th position, 12 points clear of the relegation zone and just 11 shy of the division's final play-off berth.

"Moving up six places with a win is what happens when you start stringing results together," Thomson said.

"This is a tight league and now all of a sudden we're closer to the play-offs than we are the bottom two - it's something that has been taking shape over the last few weeks.

"Obviously it's good for us. It's good for confidence and belief when you look at the table and it looks loads better than when you're sitting a couple of places above the bottom-two.

"We've just got to keep going, keep learning and keep grinding out results. We need to start winning games at home, build on the Newport result last weekend and try and make it a fortress between now and the end of the season.

"If we can do that then we will keep climbing the table, and we'll see where we end up."

Crawley came into Saturday's contest nine places above Harrogate in the League Two standings, having lost just once in their previous 10 league outings.

They also knocked Premier League Leeds United out of the FA Cup as recently as January 10, so quite understandably Thomson and his team-mates were thrilled to leave Sussex with all three points.

"It's another massive result for us," the 28-year-old added.

"First half, we've battered them really. Second half, everyone has put in an unbelievable shift again.

"We made it a little bit more difficult for ourselves with Will [Smith] getting sent off but, coming through shows the character that we have got in our dressing room.

"The manner in which we had to grind that second half out was why there was some emotion in the celebrations at the end."

Town are due to return to action on Tuesday night when they entertain Cheltenham at Wetherby Road.
