Harrogate Town boss reveals star winger Brendon Daniels turned down AFC Fylde move

Daniels tops the scoring charts in the league this season, and scored the winner for Town with a 30-yard screamer against Worcester City on Saturday.

The winger’s 11 league goals have helped Weaver’s side move into the play-off contention and they sit in fourth place, just three points behind free-scoring leaders Fylde.

The scoring exploits of the former Crewe Alexandra trainee have attracted interest from other clubs, with scouts from AFC Wimbledon casting their eye at the CNG Stadium last month.

And now Weaver has told the Harrogate Advertiser that he turned down an approach from Fylde “two months ago” to remain at the CNG Stadium.

He said: “We want to keep it together as much as we possibly can, but top teams in the league will always attract interest.

“When you have the league’s top scorer, people will be watching. You can’t deny them having a look.

“But Brendon is getting a lot from us, especially the way we are shaping up.

“I’m up front with all my players and I told him that Fylde had registered interest. But he said he was not interested and there was no way of making a sideways step.”

Weaver also allayed fears over Daniels’ fitness after the goalscorer picked up an injury during Saturday’s 1-0 win over Worcester.

Daniels was replaced by Jack Emmett ten minutes after scoring his 13th goal of the season, and he hobbled off the field with a hamstring injury.

However, Weaver said the substitution was only a “precautionary measure” and expects the midfielder to be fighting fit to face Boston United on Tuesday evening.

“He will be perfectly fine, it was just a bit of tightness in his hamstring,” said Weaver.
