Former Liverpool FC midfielder Tom Hill has been 'through hell and back' during first year at Harrogate Town
Former Liverpool FC midfielder Tom Hill received a dressing-room ovation from his Harrogate Town team-mates after completing his journey “through hell and back”.
The 23-year-old, who has endured an injury nightmare since joining the Sulphurites, made just his second League Two start of the season as Tranmere Rovers were beaten 3-0 in midweek.

A bright display was capped with an assist for Town’s third goal before he was withdrawn in the second half, but it was not just the quality of his performance on the night that earned him that round of applause.
Making it through 66 minutes of football unscathed was a big deal for Hill after what has gone before during his fledgling professional career.

Having arrived at Wetherby Road in January 2025 following a 16-year stint with Liverpool, which saw him go on to captain their Under-21s side, he managed six appearances for the Sulphurites before suffering a season-ending hamstring injury during a 0-0 draw at Port Vale in early March.
Hill worked his way back to full fitness last summer and came off the bench in Town’s opening two league fixtures of 2025/26, before going to complete the full 90 minutes of a League Cup defeat to Lincoln City and an EFL Trophy win at Mansfield.
But, having been handed his first League Two start away at Swindon on September 13, he had to be replaced after just 16 minutes having damaged that same hamstring.
Two months on the sidelines followed, before Hill made his comeback appearance against Newcastle Under-21s in November – only to limp off once again shortly before half-time.
The severity of that latest hamstring injury was such that the former Red has ended up missing another four months of football, prior to him being named in Town’s match-day squad for Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Salford City.
And although he remained an unused substitute at the weekend, Hill went on to grab his opportunity on Tuesday evening with both hands, much to the delight of manager Simon Weaver.
"Tom Hill, when he came in after the game at Tranmere, got an ovation from the players,” the Harrogate chief revealed. “They all clapped him because he’s been through hell and back with his injuries.
"I’m just buzzing that he could step into it after two training sessions with the team and play so well, and be an integral part.
"We had to manage his minutes, but when he came off after 65, he felt good. Now we just have to manage his recovery.
"But he is blessed with so much ability. He glides gracefully across the ground and is a real talent, but a talent with edge – which is rare.
"I couldn’t have asked for any more from him, especially given the amount of time that he has been out of action for.”
Hill and his Town team-mates return to action this Saturday when they visit in-form Oldham Athletic (3pm).
And, having climbed off the bottom of the table courtesy of their win at Tranmere, they know another positive result at the weekend could well see them move out of the relegation zone.
