Harrogate’s promising junior cyclists Julian Varley and Bobbin Gardner achieved great results at the recent Middlesbrough Cycling Circuit.

PH-MAS Cycling’s Julian Varley earned a fine fifth place in a strong field of senior riders.

Meanwhile, in another race on the fast, sweeping circuit, Boneshakers Race Team rider Bobbin Gardner, still only 16 years old, rode away from a field of senior riders to secure a maiden victory.

The Highfield Kitchens/Godley Cycles Evening Crit series, organised by Cycling Development North East holds events throughout the spring and summer.

Meantime, this week sees the start of the Beech House Dental Practice evening league, a series of 18 events with the best nine finishes counting to the final standings.

Champion of the last two seasons Steve Smales has had an eventful off-season by first moving from Boneshakers to Harrogate Nova but then breaking his leg.

Although on the road to recovery, he’s unlikely to defend his title, at least in the early events.

Perhaps first amongst those fighting for his crown will be Nova’s Duncan Mullier, who has been runner-up for the past four seasons. A remarkable jump in form late last season would certainly make him favourite if he can continue that into this season, but there are plenty of riders snapping at his heels.

Richard Hamilton has also moved to Nova and has a fine TT pedigree. Simon Cave has improved year on year and shows a keen dedication, junior Julian Varley may be able to juggle his racing commitments with a regular TT and improve on his third place overall last season.

Road racer Dave Morris ishighly trained but he too must juggle road racing commitments.

Seasoned racer and TTer Paul Caswell, on his day, can beat anybody and he may fancy his chances.

The ladies title sees defending Champion Jessica Bacon is unable to defend her title due to her impending motherhood.

Joanne Ketteringham is injured forthe start of the season but Alison Sarmiento has been training hard. An interesting season lies ahead.
