The top four players from the Monday session met the best four from Tuesday in Thursday’s final session.

These were Alan Blackburn and pictured from the left Jack Thomson, Alan Baldwin, Barrie Sugden, Steve Cochrane (Yorkshire ABA), Phil Attwell, Derrick Fox, Peter Syson and Trevor Ingledew.

All games were closely fought and Alan Blackburn won his quarter-final to play Alan Baldwin, while Derrick Fox beat Phil Attwell to play Trevor Ingledew in the semi-finals, both of which were knife edge games.

Blackburn surged ahead in the early stages of the game but Baldwin fought back to equalise at seven across before going into the lead.

Then Alan Blackburn fought back and kept slightly ahead until Alan Baldwin regained the jack and pushed ahead to win 21/17.

In the other semi-final Ingledew powered ahead until he was 10/4 in the lead.

Then Derrick Fox fought back and gradually gained ground until they were 13 across.

They stayed level until they were 17 across when Ingledew dug deep to gain the last few points and win 21/17.

The final was a little disappointing in that Alan Baldwin seemed to have gone off the boil and was unable to maintain the high standard of play he had shown throughout the competition.

However, Ingledew continued his form to win 21/10.

The prizes were presented by Steve Cochrane who thanked Wayside for their excellent hosting of the event.

Next year the Veteran’s Merits will be hosted by Boston Spa Bowling Club.
