Latham cracked 178 from the top of the order as Gate totalled a mammoth 377-5 from 55 overs. Jonny Tattersall also continued his fine form with the bat with 72, while Jack Potter made a 35-ball half century late on.

In response, Sam Davies’ five-for pegged Hull back before left-arm spinner Dave Foster wrapped up the innings on 136 with three wickets.

Ross said: “It was good to see Jimmy Latham cash in and get big runs which is what we encourage.

“It was probably one of the best innings I have seen. 170 turns heads where as a 70 probably doesn’t”

However, Hull reversed their fortunes in the Yorkshire League Cup on Sunday, with a dramatic victory on losing fewer wickets.

Connor Ryan (82) and Tattersall (57) led the scoring as Harrogate were bowled out for 260. Hull stuttered in their chase and looked to have been beaten at 124-9. But an unbroken last wicket partnership of 46 meant the east coast outfit clung on to a dramatic victory.

Ross said: “It was a very disappointing result and as captain I wasn’t best pleased.

“Complacency crept in. It might give us that kick up the behind to move forward and do well in the league.

“You are always going to get a shock result like that over the course of a successful season, no matter who you are.

“Unfortunately, it came at the wrong time but at least we can focus on our hopeful first place in the league.”
