Yorkshire batsman Jonny Tattersall on county search after contract release

The 20-year-old was told earlier this month that his two-year contract at Headingley would not be extended but he remains hopeful that he can still forge a career in the county game.

2013 county champions Durham have offered the Harrogate batsman a trial period over the winter, while Sussex also made an approach.

Tattersall, who came through the junior set-up of Knaresborough CC, said: “It’s not something that I am going to give up doing because someone has released me from my contract.

“Hopefully someone will offer me another contract and I can take it with both hands. I am confident in my own ability that I can become a county championship cricketer.

“You always have to take your chances wherever they come up. It would have been nice to play for Yorkshire throughout my career as you’re in your comfort zone being there 12 years. But if I have to move away, I’m happy to do that.

Opportunities to impress for the White Rose have been limited for Tattersall since he made his List A debut at the end of the 2014 season and he has struggled to make an impact in the county’s second team this summer.

On his Yorkshire exit, Tattersall said: “I probably didn’t play as many games as I would have liked. At the start of the season, I couldn’t put the starts I got into a lot of runs. That’s just the way it goes.

“I have just concentrated on trying to do my thing for the second team. If I had been scoring runs, I probably would have got the opportunity that other people have been getting.”

The batsman has enjoyed a fruitful year for Harrogate, however, and ended the season as the top runscorer in the Yorkshire League, with a total of 1,347 runs.

And he has also impressed in national colours over his short career.

Renowned for his excellent fielding ability, he has substituted for the England senior side at Headingley on a number of occasions. And the Knaresborough-born right-hander’s highlight came in 2014 when he vice-captained England U19s at the ICC World Cup in the UAE, helping his country reach the semi-finals.

Tattersall revealed his future at Harrogate was dependent on where he was plying his trade in 2016.

He added: “If I have to move, I might have to part ways with Harrogate but at the time being, I have my plans set at Harrogate.”
