Ouseburn blubbing as Pannal close gap and plunge Golds’ into drop mire

Pannal have chopped table toppers Ouseburn’s lead in half at the top of Division One after plunging Goldsborough deep into the relegation mire.

Ouse were cruising towards the title after shackling Pannal last weekend, but the favourites fell back into their rival’s clutches on Saturday due to a tense 16-run defeat at home to Blubberhouses.

With only four hurdles left, Ouseburn lead the race to the tape by seven points, knowing three victories will secure the championship.

John and Stephen Wilkinson were crucial to keeping the title race open as they both made half centuries in Blubbs’ 223-9. Jamie Bryant smashed a magnificent 138 but he ran out of partners, as only captain Chris Morrison and Sam Dale also passed double figures,

Imran Khan (5-56) and Sajid Khan (4-48) were Blubbs’ chief destroyers as they ousted Ouse for 207. Goldsborough reflected their status at the foot of the table as they struggled to cope with Pannal’s power, losing by 60 runs.

However, spinner Karthik Mani provided a spell of bowling to raise survival hopes as he took seven wickets in a 10-over spell. Rob Ellis took his seasonal tally to 679 runs as he topscored, with John Strover (36) and Jonathan Smailes (32) also contributing in the visitors’ 192-9.

Golds’ stubborn resistance denied Pannal maximum points, as John Jackson (31no) and captain Graham Shorter (11no) batted them to 132-8.

Third-placed Helperby can bin any thoughts of the title after an embarrassing 86-run loss at home to Burton Leonard. Leonard had struggled to cope with wet conditions as they battled star all-rounder Atish Chouhan’s box of tricks.

Chouhan collected five scalps as Leonard posted just 128-9, James Townsend (37) topscoring. Helperby were undone by Nicky Smith’s exceptional spell as they made just 42.

The opening bowler took seven wickets for 16 runs leaving Stuart Barker (3-1) to finish the job.

Alne gave their survival aspirations a boost with a shock triumph at home to Killinghall. The struggling side closed the gap to Dacre Banks to just two points, with a two-wicket win.

Killinghall’s top order were found wanting against openers Luke Vincent (1-43) and Sam Raper (3-16) as they fell to 21-4. Luke Clarke (36) and Josh Cutts (45) rescued ‘Hall up to 173-9, despite Shaun Foulds taking 4-46.

Killinghall gave away 41 extras, as Alex Buteux’s half century led Alne to victory. Meanwhile, Dacre were left ruing the weather as their clash at home to Spofforth was washed out.

Hampsthwaite had amassed 203-4 before the captain’s shook hands on a draw, with the weather making conditions unplayable.

In Division Two, Darley overtook promotion rivals Birstwith into second spot, thanks to a cosy 133-run win over Scotton.

Tasmial Henry (42) topscored as Darley clambered to 196-8, with Travis Miles taking 3-65. Stuart Robertson then took five wickets to topple Scotton for just 63.

Birstwith were in good shape against Knaresborough Forest, but the rain forced an early abandonment, with Forest 89-5 from 30.2 overs.

Leaders Newby Hall survived a stern test at West Tanfield to win by a solitary wicket.

Dave Henstock was Newby’s chief tormentor as he took five wickets to bowl Tanfield out for only 97, Adam Hodgkinson scoring 45.

No Newby player scored over 20 in the chase, as Andrew Hogan (4-11) and Angus Shaw (5-51) ripped through.

It was left to number ten Connor Stacey (11no) to hit the winning runs.

Galphay and Winksley’s Division Two future is hanging by the thinnest of threads following a 99-run loss to Pateley Bridge.

Galphay are 18 points shy of survival, needing to win all their matches to stay up.

Bridge racked up 178-8 before ten-man Galphay collapsed for 69, thanks to Tom Fryer’s four wickets.

Harrogate 3rds earned a crucial nine-wicket victory over fellow relegation contenders Studley Royal 2nds, in a match reduced to 20 overs.

Royal posted 126-4. But Gate wicketkeeper Ben Sedgley’s unbeaten 76 saw his side home.

Meanwhile, Masham and Ripley shook hands on a draw with the rain halting Masham at 55-3 in their chase of 155-8.

l Pannal 4ths have been relegated to Division Eight. Newby Hall 3rds are the champions of Division Nine and will join Pannal 4ths next season, alongside Beckwithshaw 3rds, who finished second.
