Nidderdale League: Defiant Goldsborough see off Hampsthwaite to boost survival hopes

Goldsborough gave themselves a fighting chance of staving off relegation with the shock of the week to beat Hampsthwaite.

Mike Cockle’s 63 not out provided the steady head for the bottom side to clinch only their fourth win in Division One this summer.

Ben Mackrill and Karthik Mani both took three wickets to restrict home side Hamps’ to just 151-9.

The hosts needed Richard Barratt (35) and Robbie Jamieson’s (40) 84-run partnership to rescue the innings after falling to 66-7. Cockle partnered Tom Mackrill (49) as Golds won with more than five overs spare.

One place and one point above Golds, second bottom Alne let slip a dominant position against Burton Leonard to lose by seven wickets.

Opener Peter Carr hit 89 to lead Alne to 218-8, with Rob Proudley’s 58 completing the innings. There was no alarm for Leonard in reply as James Townsend fired 96no in a 150 stand alongside Matthew Rangeley (58no).

At the top, nerveless bowling from Ouseburn’s opening partnership returned the leaders to winning ways in a thriller against Helperby.

Russell Robshaw (3-46) and captain Chris Morrison (3-46) were the heroes as they stopped Helperby eight runs short, with only three balls left.

Helperby had bowled Ouse out for a par 189, with David Cummings smashing 88 not out and Alistair Darnell’s four wickets causing the most issues.

Matt Cavanagh’s 63 put Helperby on course for victory until the Ouse opening duo returned to whittle away the tail.

Title-chasing Pannal were 19 runs too strong for Dacre Banks thanks to a late order rally and Matt Henry’s superb six-wicket haul.

Having fallen to 76-5, Pannal wicket-keeper Dave Wood (57no) led the fightback alongside James Rawlings (38) and Graham Fish (31) to get them up to 214-8. Stepen Butler (49) topscored for Dacre but Henry’s introduction changed the course of the chase. The bowler ended up with six wickets in his 12 overs, conceding just 25 runs, to oust Dacre for 195.

Blubberhouses dropped Spofforth into the relegation mix, in a match that saw more than 500 runs scored.

Simon Wilkinson’s magnificent 108 from 89 balls powered Blubbs to 265-8, with Mike White 3-52 the pick of the bowlers. Will Long’s run-a-ball 72 put Spoff in good shape in the reverse. But with Nick McCall (47no) and White (17no) left at the crease, the hosts came up just three runs short, with five wickets in hand.

Two centuries were witnessed at Killinghall as the hosts saw off Bishop Thornton by five wickets.

Rob Nelson’s second hundred of the year put Thornton up to 229-4 in the opening 45 overs. But the visiting skipper was trumped by ‘Hall’s Damien Lawrence, who stroked 124 for the hosts.

Newby Hall require one more win to be assured of a place in the top tier, after a 38-run victory over Masham.

Captain Shane Griffin (87) and Jim Blackburn (68) led the leader’s crusade as they smacked 245-4.

Despite losing captain Luke Tomlin first ball, Masham were set for victory with Adam Smith (55) and Sam Parsons (95) at the crease. But Dave Henstock brilliant six-wicket spell ruined Masham’s afternoon.

Darley were at their imposing best to end West Tanfield’s promotion aspirations and bolster their position in second.

Michael Beecroft’s four-for restricted Tanfield to 155-8, with Harry Glatman (57) topscoring. Rory Best then blasted 81 to see Darley to an eight-wicket victory. Darley will have been delighted to learn about Birstwith’s demise against relegation candidates Studley Royal 2nds, in the weekend’s shock result.

Royal obliterated the promotion hopefuls by eight wickets, after chasing down 168-9. The result hauled Royal out of the bottom two, as they climbed above Harrogate 3rds.

The Straydogs failed to better Pateley Bridge’s 213-6, as they fell 19 runs short in the 45-over timeframe.

Tom Fryer’s 61 and Colin Chadwick’s half century gave Bridge a decent total, despite Andy Scurr’s five-for. Ben Sedgley (44) and Ben Bartlett (72no) made hay in the chase, but Chadwick’s tight spell of 3-28 left them dangling short.

Dylan O’Malley fired another century as Ripley smashed bottom side Galphay and Winksley by 71 runs. O’Malley made 112 in Ripley’s 221-7, before Galphay went down for 150.

Iain Campbell (5-32) starred for Scotton as they overcame Knaresborough Forest by seven wicket.

Gary Harland (57no) stayed strong throughout the chase, as Ellerkey (41) and Sam Halliday (46no) completed the job.
