York Senior League: Royal climb up to second after Driffield win

Studley Royal climbed up to second place in the York Senior League Premier Division standings following Saturday's win over Driffield Town at Kings Mill Road.

James Clarkson (80) and Nick Stuart (55no) both made half-centuries and although Rob Nicholson (46) fell just short, the visitors reached 206/6.

Nick Johnson picked up 3-60 for Town, but despite following it up with 73 he finished on the losing side, Matt Coad (3-37) and Jim Grange (3-33) each taking three wickets for Royal as the hosts were dismissed for 175.

Knaresborough cruised to victory over Ripon in their first division derby encounter.

Opener Rob Taylor (77) and skipper Mike Ainsley (40) looked in good touch for the hosts, but a superb spell of 5-28 from Graeme Wiles saw them restricted to 165 all out.

Andy Ward’s 41 and a knock of 33 by Nat Cutts then steered Knaresborough to a six-wicket triumph with nine overs to spare.

Harrogate 2nds’ Division One clash at home to Dringhouses ended in a six-wicket reverse.

Ben Kempley impressed with the bat for the Roosters, hitting 64 in a below-par total of 165.

And despite some miserly bowling from Will Parker, who took 2-12 off eight overs, Dringhouses made it to 166/4 in the 45 over.

In Galtres Division Two, Thirsk bounced back from a heavy defeat last time out when they overcame winless Pannal by five wickets.

Batting first, Pannal started well with Andy & Rob Ellis (both 38) putting on 74 for the first wicket before Dan Magee (4-58) caused a mini-collapse.

It was left to Darren Shaw (44) and Isaac Boocock (26) to recover the innings to 212/9, but this total was not to prove enough.

A crucial 97-run partnership between Ben Collinson (72) and captain James Wilkinson (37) broke the back of Thirsk’s chase before the win was wrapped up in the 43rd over.

Sessay 2nds made 230/4 at home to Thorp Arch & Boston Spa, Lee Margerison (48 not out) Tom Wilkinson (46), and Stuart Clark (33 not out) their top-scorers.

TABS struggled in reply with Ben Scaling (4-52) and James Skelton (3-21) proving difficult customers, however important contributions from George Gibson (40) and Ethan Parsons (29) ensured the match ended in a draw as the second innings closed on 152/8.

Rory Coe and Richard Grogan both made 56 in a partnership of 96 for Tadcaster Magnets when they visited Bilton in Ainsty and posted198/7, Mark Crosbie claiming 3-50 for the home team.

Bilton’s response started poorly as they were reduced to 65/6 with Coe again contributing with 3-31 and Jack Burton grabbing 3-38.

And although there were late flurries from Graham (37) and Ian Hutchison (25), the home team were bowled out for 144, meaning that the Magnets took the full 30 points.

Wetherby travelled to Thorp Arch & Boston Spa 2nds in a Galtres Division Three derby and a close affair ensued.

The home side batted first and made 198/9 with runs from Michael Cole (66) and Dale Gibson (35), while Harry Sutton helped himself to 4-44.

Wetherby looked out of the hunt when they were reduced to 113/7, but 53 not out from Aidan Flint saw his team home by two wickets.

There was another nail-biting finale when Tadcaster Magnets 2nds met Stillington.

Taddy batted first and 86 from John Hunter allied to Will Walker’s 46 lifted the score to 158/9 at tea.

In a dramatic finish, Stillington’s reply ended one run short but also nine wickets down to give the hosts the winning draw.

Another close battle took place when Huby visited Knaresborough 2nds.

Batting first, the visitors made 168/9, however the home team were able to edge past their target with eight balls remaining and only three wickets in hand.
