Going into the final day of their latest County Championship encounter with Middlesex at Scarborough, nobody expected that the reigning champions were in a good position to win the match.

But nobody really expected them to lose either - slipping to their first innings defeat for three years.

The Yorkshire Post’s cricket writer Chris Waters was at North Marine Road to witness the setback for Jason Gillespie’s team who, at exactly the halfway point in the foyr-day campaign, are sat in fifth place, 15 points behind new leaders Middlesex, but with a game in hand.

As well as reassuring Yorkshire’s supporters that there is nothing too much to worry about, Chris also discusses the return to the England fold of Gary Ballance, more than a year after he last appeared on the international stage in the five-day format.

Host Phil Harrison also manages to cajole a few minutes of chat out of Chris on Yorkshire Vikings’ slim hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the NatWest T20 Blast as Alex Lees’s team prepare for the visit of the Birmingham Bears on Friday night.
