Athletics round-up: Harrogate Harriers runner Miller storms to Guiseley Gallop win

Harrogate Harriers runner Chris Miller won a race for the second successive weekend with a top of the podium performance at the Guiseley Gallop 10K.

Miller earned himself an Easter treat as he led the field from start to finish on the two-lap hilly course.

He crossed the line more than a minute ahead of second place in 36 minutes 50 seconds. The 34-year-old had also topped the podium at the Rivock Edge Fell Race seven days previous.

Nidd Valley Road Runners’ Martin Lofthouse produced a strong performance through the woods with the second fastest time in the over 45 category, finishing in 21st place in 42.04.

Richard Willis was the second Harrogate Harrier to the line in 45.25, seven places ahead of Chris’ dad Brian Miller (46.01) in 61st. Adam Couldwell was a further four places down the field in 46.35.

Jonny Johnson continued his fine form to win the popular Helmsley 10K in a cracking sub 36 minute time of 35.23.

Over the last two weeks he has now won at a hilly 5K in West Yorkshire and a hilly 10K in North Yorkshire. He was also accompanied by team-mate Tim Broomfield, who came third in the M60 category (97th place), in 48:51.

Meanwhile, Ben Shacklock ran the ‘Canalathon’ on Sunday and defied the stormy weather to finish inside seven hours. The Harrogate athlete was only three minutes behind the second placed runner in the 75km race, held in Rochdale.

Jacki Artist, Jodie Peary and Luke O’Connor enjoyed the mud at the Ripley Viking Gauntlet on Easter Saturday, with Artist claiming the first lady prize.

Knaresborough Striders’ Andrea Price and Dawn Richardson took on the ‘Easter 5 Mile Dash’ in Bridlington on Good Friday. They finished in 44:58 and 47:49 respectively.
