Open morning for 2025 admissions to Harrogate’s Parent Power top ten school – register now

Prestigious Harrogate Ladies’ College has a proud heritage as one of the first all-girls’ schools to open in the country more than 130 years ago.
Whilst it remains proud of its past, the school now has its sights on a promising future to provide the best education for all of its pupils. As a girls-only senior school, it is able to adjust its teaching to suit girls – who research has shown learn differently to boys.
Its results are clearly shown in outstanding academic results, which place it in the top 5% of schools in the UK. In 2023, 68% of its students gained places at Russell Group universities, including two places at Cambridge.
Results place the school comfortably as the highest performing in the Harrogate area for both GCSE and A level.
Principal Sylvia Brett is also keen to encourage more girls to opt for Science subjects in GCSEs, A-levels and university courses – and the school offers a wide range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) choices.

New centre to help pupils Flourish
Sylvia explains: “The underlying philosophy is we want our pupils to be happy and well-adjusted because happy and well-adjusted pupils will perform better academically.”
Wellbeing is therefore at the heart of everything the school does and a new wellness centre has been built on site. It is staffed by a team looking after the pastoral and physical wellbeing of pupils.
As well as providing a swimming pool and multi-gym, more than 50 extra-curricular clubs and activities are available for pupils to take part in. A full programme of weekend trips is also provided for boarders, but day pupils can also take part. And for day pupils there is wrap around care, pre sessions in boarding houses and access to teaching staff after hours.
The school’s health and wellbeing programme Flourish includes a wellbeing app for all pupils, as well as encouragement for them to regularly record how they feel and coping strategies to help them.
SEN (Special Educational Needs) provision offers extra support for all who need it, including extension programmes for high performing students. And there is also an on-site chapel for collective worship.
