A Yorkshire school with a proud heritage is opening its doors to prospective parents and pupils on Friday May 2.

This is your chance to take a look around the prestigious Harrogate Ladies’ College, an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 2-18 in the heart of Harrogate. Register now to secure your place.

The open event will present an opportunity not only to find out more about the academic achievements of the school, but to tour the facilities and learn more from both students and staff about the whole-school approach to nurture happy and well-adjusted young women who go on to thrive.

Parents who have entrusted the school with the care and education of their daughers have put it in the the top ten of the schools in the north (this is according to Parent Power).

Why all-girls?

Harrogate Ladies’ College has a proud heritage as one of the first all-girls’ schools to open in the country more than 130 years ago. Research shows girls learn in a different way from boys, and as a girl’s-only senior school it is able to adjust its teaching to suit them best.

And the results speak for themselves. Its results place it in the top 5 per cent of schools in the UK. In 2023, 68% of its students gained places at Russell Group universities, including two places at Cambridge.

Principal (Acting) Joanna Fox is keen to encourage more girls to opt for Science subjects in GCSEs, A-levels and university courses – and the school offers a wide range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) choices.

New centre to help pupils Flourish

Joanna explains: “The underlying philosophy is we want our pupils to be happy and well-adjusted because happy and well-adjusted pupils will perform better academically.”

Wellbeing is therefore at the heart of everything the school does and a new wellness centre has been built on site. It is staffed by a team looking after the pastoral and physical wellbeing of pupils.

Beyond the classroom

There is a diverse choice of activities available at the school to enhance wellbeing and encourage socialisation and sports endeavours. These include a multi-gym and swimming pool, more than 50 extra-curricular activities and a full programme of weekend trips available to boarders and day pupils.

For day pupils there is wrap around care, pre sessions in boarding houses and access to teaching staff after hours, which helps many families with their daily lives.

The school’s health and wellbeing programme Flourish includes a wellbeing app for all pupils, as well as encouragement for them to regularly record how they feel and coping strategies to help them.

SEN (Special Educational Needs) provision offers extra support for all who need it, including extension programmes for high performing students. And there is also an on-site chapel for collective worship.
