School joins lockdown activity scheme

Cundall Manor School is asking pupils, parents and staff to earmark dedicated time to be active as part of a wider wellbeing movement.

The initiative is being led by the school’s Games Department who have organised ‘Woofer Walking Wednesday’ throughout the first half of term and have welcomed one and all to get out on a Wednesday afternoon to enjoy the great outdoors - with or without man’s best friend.

John Liley, Sport Director, said: “As a rural school, many of us are surrounded by amazing countryside and we would like everyone to take advantage of it and reap the benefits that it provides, physically and mentally.”

“We know the benefits of being active and as a school we think that lockdown shouldn’t stop us doing what we love so we thought this would be a great opportunity to get outside and join a wider movement not to mention it means getting some all-important non-screen time!”

Adding: “We have also using an online app and have created separate School clubs for running, walking and cycling so that the pupils can record their activity and can compare how they are doing with the rest of the school community as well as work towards a collective target.”

Deputy Head at Cundall Manor School, Stuart Bayne added: “We recognise that our pupils and parents are spending a large proportion of their week inside and on screens.

“By encouraging them to ditch the screens for an hour or two on a regular basis and get active, we hope it will have a positive impact for their mental wellbeing.

“Our regular games slots throughout the week also aim to get our pupils doing something different, perhaps go for a walk or bike ride.”

Pupils and parents are being encouraged to share their ‘Woofer Walking Wednesday’ photos that will be collated for a presentation in school.

So far, the children have braved very wet and windy weather, snow and even had passing blue skies last week.
