I’m replacing my old shed – these BiGDUG upgrades could transform how I use the space (aff)

What started as a simple shed replacement has turned into a complete rethink of storage, organisation and workspace. These are the BiGDUG upgrades I’m considering.

I’ve finally got around to replacing the rotting shed I inherited when we moved in three years ago. And not before time.

We live in a pretty small cottage with barely any storage, so getting this right actually matters. A properly set-up shed should be a bit of a game changer. But I quickly realised that dragging out a couple of old IKEA cube units and calling it job done just isn’t going to cut it.

The more I thought about it, the more I realised the problem wasn’t the shed itself. It was everything that would eventually end up inside it.

Tools. Paint tins. Garden equipment. Power tool batteries. Half-finished DIY projects. The endless collection of things that somehow don’t belong anywhere else in the house.

If you’re working with a tight space, every square inch counts. That’s why I’ve found myself spending rather more time than I’d like looking through the BiGDUG garage collections.

The first thing I’ve been looking at is proper heavy-duty shelving. Not flimsy units that start bowing the moment you put anything substantial on them, but shelving that can genuinely handle the weight of tools, paint tins and those stackable storage boxes you inevitably end up buying.

The BiGDUG shelving range comes in different widths and depths, which means you can tailor it to your exact footprint rather than wasting valuable space. The adjustable shelves are a big plus too. As anyone who has ever organised a shed knows, what you’re storing this year won’t necessarily be what you’re storing next year.

What I like is that these aren’t complicated to put together either. It’s a simple boltless design – more “tap together and get on with it” than a full weekend construction project.

But once I started thinking about organisation properly, another problem became obvious.

Where do all the tools go?

Anyone who enjoys DIY knows the frustration of spending ten minutes looking for a screwdriver you were holding five minutes ago. Somehow tools seem to migrate into boxes, corners and impossible hiding places.

That’s why the BiGDUG power tool storage rack caught my eye. It gives drills, batteries and chargers a proper home instead of letting them float around the shed creating clutter.

For hand tools and everything else, I’m increasingly tempted by the BiGDUG 24-inch tool chest and rollercab. At £100 ex VAT it’s a fraction of the price of some of the big-name tool storage systems, but still gives you six drawers and cupboard storage.

The thought of actually knowing where every spanner, socket and screwdriver lives feels surprisingly appealing.

On the opposite side of my 8x6ft shed, I’m also planning to squeeze in a small workbench.

The BiGDUG garage workstation and workbench range feels like the logical next step once you’ve got storage sorted. Somewhere to actually work rather than balancing projects on top of storage boxes or crouching on the floor.

Then there’s one upgrade I hadn’t really considered until recently.

The floor.

Most sheds and garages have concrete floors that are cold, dusty and not particularly pleasant to spend time on. The BiGDUG double garage floor tile system instantly makes a space look more professional while adding insulation and creating a cleaner working environment.

It’s the sort of thing that transforms how a workshop feels before you’ve even added any storage.

There’s also a useful incentive if you’re planning a wider upgrade. Using the code BD5GARAGE gives 5% off the Garage Collection until June 30. It won’t fund the whole project, but on larger purchases it’s worth having.

For me, this has gone from replacing a tired old shed to thinking properly about how I want to use the space.

Somewhere to store things, yes. But also somewhere to fix things, build things and actually enjoy spending time.

Because once you’ve got a space that’s organised and easy to use, you tend to find more reasons to use it.
