How to watch a new season of major productions at home for free

More big shows are heading online to be enjoyed at home free of charge.

YouTube channel The Shows Must Go On!, which hosted streams of West End musicals over the summer, is now turning its attention to a mixture of solo performances and touring productions.

First up is Fame the Musical on September 25, while the following week, viewers can watch Michael Ball’s 2009 show Past and Present on October 2. Filmed at the Royal Albert Hall, it features songs from Hairspray and Les Miserables sung by the much-loved performer.

Alfie Boe’s Bring Him Home Tour will be screened on October 9, with songs sung by Boe alongside Matt Lucas, Melanie C and Tom Fletcher.

The season ends with the 2012 touring production of Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds. The groundbreaking production, filmed at London’s O2 Arena, stars Jason Donovan, Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson and Kerry Ellis. The show will be streamed on October 16.

Jeff Wayne’s double album was originally released by CBS Records in 1978. It has enjoyed huge success and critical acclaim across the globe with over 15 million records sold and spending over 330 weeks in the UK album charts plus achieving two International hit singles – Forever Autumn and The Eve of The War. The album has also chart-topped in 11 countries around the world and top ten in 22.

The War of The Worlds has also won two UK Ivor Novello Awards, the US Best Recording in Science Fiction and Fantasy – the judges included Alfred Hitchcock, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg – as well as winning, for Jeff, Classic Rock’s Showman of The Year Award.

Jeff Wayne’s musical version of The War of The Worlds has grown into a classic in its own right, acquiring new generations of devoted followers since its original release.

The production features remarkable special effects, including the three-tonne 35-ft tall Martian Fighting Machine firing real flames into the arena.
