It might be unthinkable, but far from impossible, for the social and economic benefits of Harrogate’s place in Le Grand Départ to result in the permanent desecration of the Stray.
Your editorial and Judy d’Arcy Thompson’s letter of December 19 make it clear that we must not be complacent.
The words “temporary” and “suspension” must be writ large and clearly defined - by when and by whom will reinstatement be carried out and who will determine that it has been properly done? HBC’s long-term failure to respond to the regular weekend incursions of bone-idle drivers on Oatlands Stray gives cause for concern. Malcolm Neesam once related the cautionary tale of rolling heads, following nothing more than intrusive flower beds on West Park Stray in the 1930s. Time to re-print this perhaps - and to erect a model guillotine outside the council offices “pour encourager les autres”?
