Letter: This must be the start of permanent cycling provision

Councillor Richard Willis is to be congratulated on his initiative, along with Moonglu Cycling Club, in organising Ripon Cycle Races on June 24.

I just hope there will be a geriatric category for race entries!

This cycling initiative must however be the start of something much more permanent for cycling in Ripon.

As a regular, and often only, cyclist to be seen in central Ripon I am only too well aware of the lack of cycle routes, dedicated cycle ways and other provision to encourage people to make cycling a part of everyday life to school, work and for shopping.

Harrogate is fast developing cycle routes such as the Beryl Burton Way, connecting Knaresborough to Harrogate and the Nidderdale Way to Ripley.

Ripon seems, yet again, to have been left behind as we still have no cycle routes, not even in the planning stage.

My initial suggestion for Ripon would be a dedicated cycle lane alongside the A61, continuing the route from Ripley but using the existing road corridor which for most of its route is considerably wider than the highway.

Who is responsible for new cycle ways?

It appears to be shared between our district and county councils so I suggest representations should start with the six councillors representing Ripon on Harrogate Borough Council.
