Letter: Evironment

Plastic Free Harrogate invites environmentally concerned members of the public to the first Plastic Free Open Meeting on Monday, May 21 from 7.30pm to 9pm at Starling coffee house, 47 Oxford Street.

We are a group of like-minded people who feel that a target of eliminating all avoidable plastic waste by 2042 as proposed by our government is just a tad unambitious and believe we can make a difference in proposing simple steps now to reduce plastic waste and our reliance on single use plastics.

Although we live far from the sea, we can do our bit for the environment here as well.

Every bit of plastic diverted from landfill or incineration, or even worse, the bellies of wildlife, helps tackle a world-wide, inter-generational issue.

We’ve seen lots of amazing initiatives from local businesses in Harrogate, such as Baltzersens banning the use of disposable cups from their cafe, and are convinced more can be done in households and businesses, and in terms of improved recycling and waste collection by the council.

We are organising the open event on May 21 with the aim of meeting more people with inspiring ideas and to reach out to all your readers who want to find out more.

Anyone passionate about the problem of plastic waste and eager to get involved can email us at [email protected] or find us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

Together we can make a difference!
