Harrogate is one of three North Yorkshire councils waiting to hear if their bid to host either a start or finish for Yorkshire’s own international cycle race has been successful.

The town is hoping to relive its finest moment when in 2014 Parliament Street played host to the final stretch of the Tour de France’s Grand Depart, drawing 360,000 visitors to the Harrogate district.

Earlier in the year Harrogate Council leader Coun Richard Cooper (Con, High Harrogate) said: “Coun Cooper said: “We would like to host a stage finish, just like we did with the Tour de France.

“We have proved big style that we can host big events in the town successfully. We can do these things, we should be shouting about it, we know we can pull these things off.”

The start and finish points for 2016 will be announced by Welcome to Yorkshire’s chief executive, Sir Gary Verity at 11:45am.
