Wheelchair basketball is on target with students

Last week, we were extremely lucky to welcome the ‘Hoopstars Wheelchair Basketball Company’ into school.

The Hoopstars Wheelchair Basketball Company event, organised by Careers and Vocational Co-ordinator Luci Davis and paid for with a grant from the Robert Hungate Foundation, gave students the chance to experience playing a sport by using a completely different skills set and seeing it from a whole new perspective.

A school spokesman said: “Luci had first heard about Hoopstars when her daughter’s primary school arranged a session, her daughter raved about it so much that it spurred Luci into action.

“She applied for a grant to bring the unique and life-affirming event to Sherburn High.”

She added: “Our students learnt how to manoeuvre the wheelchair just by performing a swimming action with their arms and using stomach muscles to gather momentum, once they’d mastered moving, they then had to handle the basketball as well.

“Ex Policeman, Adrian Kennedy of Hoopstars spent two days putting our staff and students through their paces, he was extremely patient and encouraging.

“Everyone had a wonderful time and had big smiles on their faces as they whizzed across the sports hall.”

Year 8 student Kennedy Parkinson said: “It gave me a different perspective.”
