The traditional Boxing Day meeting at Wetherby Racecourse has been abandoned due to a flooded course.

More than 40mm of water fell on the course overnight and left the back straight under water.

Sunday's meeting has also been abandoned.

Clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson said: "We've had 40mm of rain since yesterday lunchtime and it is still raining now.

"The dykes down the back straight have flooded so that is our problem.

"It's forecast to continue raining today so it's not going to improve."

The Boxing Day meeting is one of Wetherby's busiest racedays and was due to feature the Rowland Meyrick Chase.
