Wetherby park is the bees needs

Sandringham Park in Wetherby has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world.

Friends of Sandringham Park has also won this years Green Flag Bees Needs award for the work it does for bees, making changes to improve their habitat and loss of and by improving food sources for them.

Chairman of the group which has driven the turn-around of a once decaying and troubled site into a vibrant park, Kazia Knight, said they were thrilled to have won a Bees Needs award by DEFRA and Green Flag.

Kazia said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Community Green Flag Award for the seventh year, a Green Flag Community Award recognises quality sites managed by voluntary and community groups.

“We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining Sandringham Park to such a high standard.

“This award is a testament to the work and dedication of all who work in Sandringham Park for the benefit of all who use this beautiful green space.”

Friends of Sandringham Park was born in December 2010 because of the high levels of anti-social behaviour in the park.

There was also an enormous amount of rubbish including old TV parts, Asbestos and smashed glass.

Transforming Sandringham Park into a multi-award winning green space that is now used as a case study of good practise for other green spaces, has been a labour of love and dedication by the volunteers.

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
