The level three alert is one step below a national emergency.

The Met Office said: "There is a 90 per cent chance of Heat-Health criteria being met between 8am on Thursday and 9pm on Friday in parts of England.

"Temperatures exceeding 30C were observed quite widely across the UK on Wednesday.

"Similar temperatures, perhaps a degree or two higher are expected widely on Thursday. "

The forecaster added: "Look out for others, especially older people, young children and babies and those with underlying health conditions.

"Close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors.

"Drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol, dress appropriately and slow down when it is hot."
