A Harrogate woman has beaten the odds by shedding almost half her own body weight after doctors advised her to lose weight to save her health.

Victoria Grantham, 40, has lost seven and half stone since she joined a Weight Watchers group in Knaresborough, bringing her weight down from 17 stone to 10 stone.

Forty-year-old Victoria, who has Downs Syndrome, said she is pleased with how well she has done, and loves going to the Weight Watchers group. She has said she wants to prove to others that they can achieve their aims.

Support worker Cath Sewell works with Victoria and has helped with her diet and exercise aims. She said: “I am so impressed by what Victoria has managed. We are all amazed at her.

“Victoria adores food but she has listened to advice and has done amazingly well. She is four foot eight inches, but was 17 stone and she had really compromised her health so the doctor said she had to do something.”

Cath praised Weightwatchers leader Jenny Gallazzi and the rest of the Knaresborough group, who have welcomed Victoria, as well as gym staff and employees at Harrogate branch of Subway who have got to know Victoria when she visits the shop.

“Jenny and everybody at Weightwatchers have been brilliant. They’ve accepted her for who she is.”

Victoria goes to Harrogate Hydro gym where trainer Matt has encouraged and supported her, and goes walking with Open Country – a outdoors group for people with disabilities.

Cath added: “This hasn’t just affected her physical health, it’s helped her in a lot of ways.

“She’s doing things now we never expected her to do.”
