Unusual ride for charity

Harrogate cyclist Ian Newall will be riding in the Brompton World Championship at Blenheim Palace on August 21.

Raising money for Breast Cancer Care, he will be competing against everyone from fun-runners to serious athletes.

In 2009, the event was won by Roberto Heras, a former team-mate of Lance Armstrong and two times winner of the Tour of Spain.

Ian said: “The Brompton is a folding bicycle and the world championship consists of two furious laps around the hilly Blenheim Palace circuit.

“To make it more interesting, the race begins with a Le Mans start where riders are required to run about 50 yards, unfold and mount their bicycles before sprinting down the first straight in front of the palace.

“A very strict dress code is enforced: business attire, including jacket and tie, although riders may wear shorts and cycling shoes. Lycra clothing is strictly forbidden.”
