A VAN driver who caused substantial damage to an elderly woman’s car in a collision on the A1 drove away from the scene.
The woman’s silver Subaru Forrester was in a lay-by on the southbound carriageway, two miles south of Catterick, around 10.45am on Saturday, July 23.
A white van travelling in the same direction collided with the side of the car, causing substantial damage and trapping the 78-year-old driver inside.
The van driver stopped about 200 metres further down the road, checked his own vehicle and drove off without making any contact with the woman.
Police are now searching for the driver and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
TC Graham Waller, who is investigating the collision, said: “I would like to hear from any witnesses to the collision or anyone who may know the van or driver in question.
“Thankfully the lady was uninjured by the collision, but she was understandably very shaken by what has happened.
“The van is described as a white box-type van and may have damage and scrapings of silver paint along one side.”
