Man dies after being hit by train in Harrogate

A man has died after being hit by a train in Harrogate this afternoon.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was struck near Crimple Viaduct and officers were called to the incident at 1.36pm.

British Transport Police (BTP), West Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service attended the scene but officers said they were not treating the incident as suspicious.

Northern Rail first reported that a person had been hit by a train between Harrogate and Leeds at 11.30am and said that all lines were blocked.

Delays of up to 60 minutes were being reported between York and Leeds via Harrogate with many services being cancelled.

A BTP spokeswoman said: “Officers were called to reports of a man being struck by a train near Crimple Viaduct in Harrogate at 1.36pm today, Thursday, 16 April.

“BTP officers attended, alongside colleagues from the West Yorkshire Police and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

“A man was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are currently working to identify the man and inform his family.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
