Major roadworks to hit Harrogate's busiest road again

Harrogate drivers already frustrated at the pace of traffic on Skipton Road as lockdown eases have been given a brief respite from, yes, more roadworks.

Essential work to gas pipes was scheduled to start earlier this week on Harrogate's busiest road.

But the start of the project has now been postponed until Sunday, July 12, following discussions with Harrogate Borough Council.

But drivers are being warned to expect delays when the Northern Gas Networks project does get under way.

The road works will be in place on Skipton Road until September when pupils are expected to go back to school after the disruption caused by the nation's battle to contain coronavirus.

The new utility works are part of an ongoing multi-million pound upgrade of the gas distribution network by Northern Gas Networks (NGN).

This part of the project will see the replacement of the old metal gas pipes with new, more durable plastic ones.

The whole project is still expected to take 14 weeks for NGN to complete.

The utility company, which introduced an unlimited community volunteering policy for its 1,300-strong workforce so they could carry out unlimited, paid voluntary work in local communities during the Coronavirus crisis, says it will provide regular updates for residents and businesses on our website and on our social media channels.

NGN will also communicate directly with those customers located near the junctions of Skipton Road where the work will take place to inform them of the postponement.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door-knocking local residents and businesses to make customers aware of the work, while on-site signage will advise motorists of the work taking place.

Regular updates will also be available on NGN’s website at northerngasnetworks.co.uk, on Twitter @NGNgas and on Facebook @northerngasnetworks.

NGN's project to replace 250m of existing metal gas mains in Harrogate with more durable plastic pipes began in February with the first phase at Queen Parade at the junction with Victoria Avenue.

NGN says the work will not only keep the gas supply flowing safely and reliably today, but it will ensure that the network is ready to deliver reliable and affordable green energy in future.
