Skipton Road in Harrogate has the dubious honour of being the UK’s second most congested road at rush hour outside of London.

Motorists using the commuter route can expect to travel at an average speed of 1.50mph during peak times, according to research by firm RAM Tracking.

The road fought off competition from cities such as Birmingham, Leeds and Liverpool in the survey, with the average speed slower only in the capital, and on a road in Manchester.

Chris McClellan, Managing Director of RAM Tracking said: “Our findings have revealed what a phenomenal amount of time many business drivers waste when travelling during the breakfast rush hour.

“By analysing the minute-by-minute motoring data provided by our tracking system spanning location, speed and fuel consumption, fleet managers and business owners can manage the efficiency and cost of running their vehicles. “Because they can see exactly where their vehicles are at any one time, they can also either navigate drivers away from trouble spots in real time, or examine historical data to plan alternative routes or travel times, to avoid congestion black spots.

“Such tactics can lead to huge cost savings by avoiding wasted fuel and vehicle wear and tear in idling conditions, as well as achieving minimum journey times. Another benefit is that drivers are less likely to drive unsafely in an effort to make up lost time and arrive at appointments on time and unstressed.”

The firm used its tracking system to produce the results after examining the speeds and locations of business drivers across the country in February. Distances travelled between 8am and 9am were compared with those times from 11am to 12pm.

In December, residents blasted plans for 290 houses to be built on the road.

Supermarket giant Tesco is preparing to begin work on a superstore at the junction of Skipton Road and Ripon Road.

And garden centre chain Dobbies revealed plans in November to build a ten-acre site on the road.

However busy Skipton Road feels, the picture could be bleaker, with RAM Tracking finding Jamaica Road in London to be the country’s most congested road, with commuters cruising at a leisurely average of 0.08mph
