Chemical spill on the A61 near Ripley

Fire crews dealt with a chemical spill on the A61 near Ripley overnight.

Approximatley 20 to 30 litres of Formic acid had leaked onto the road from a barrel which had fallen off a tractor and then hit two vehicles travelling behind on the A61.

Everyone travelling in the cars was checked over by paramedics.

Crews from Harrogate and Tadcaster initially respondedto reports of a chemical spill on the A61 near Ripley at 10.52pm.

Upon arrival crews called for a further three appliances and another heavy rescue unit which came from Summerbridge, Ripon, Knaresborough and Malton.

The fire crews used six breathing apparatus, four gas tight suits and full decotamination showers in the clean up and left the scene at around 2.40am.
