Two cars and a lorry collided causing huge traffic problems in the Wetherby area this morning.
Police attended the scene on the A1(M) motorway, a mile south of Junction 46 near Boston Spa at around 5am.
Two cars and an HGV were at the centre of the collision, ans West Yorkshire Police reported a total of nine vehicles were involved.
Commuters faced long delays as the main carriageway was closed for around five hours and diversions were in place on the A168.
Two people were taken to York Hospital with minor injuries. The road has since reopened.
Insp Steve Reed of West Yorkshire Police, said: “West Yorkshire Police have received an exceptionally high amount of road traffic collisions throughout the early hours of today, mainly on each of the major motorway networks due to vehicles skidding on black ice.
“Areas affected include both the North and Southbound carriageways of the M1, at various locations. Both the North and Southbound carriageways of the A1 at various locations. Both the East and West bound carriageways of the M62 at various locations, and the M606.
“There were no reports of serious injuries, but the collisions resulted in closures of the M1 Southbound near to J41 and the A1 Southbound near J45. Emergency services are still dealing with many of these incidents and working hard to clear the carriageways.
“The public are requested to be aware of the issues on the Motorway network and take extreme care when travelling this morning.”
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “There have been 11 collisions on the A1 today and the police are advising motorists to drive with caution due to the icy conditions.”
Earlier this morning the southbound carriageway was shut after a total of nine vehicles were involved in a collision one mile south of the junction.
