Time for flood hit Tadcaster to get back to normal

It is time for Tadcaster to get back to normal following the devasting Boxing Day floods.

So was the message from Selby District Council chairman, Coun Richard Sweeting who invited residents to a special celebration tea party at the Riley-Smith Hall on Sunday to say thanks for their efforts.

In attendance were civic dignitaries and officials from the town, including the Mayor of Tadcaster Don Mackay and Pat Mackay, along with Chairman of North Yorkshire County Council David Jeffels and Marilyn Jeffels, Coun Margaret Middlemiss, Coun Steve Cobb, MP Nigel Adams and his wife Claire Adams.

In his speech, Mr Sweeting, said: “The purpose of this afternoon is to publicly thank all those who helped the town of Tadcaster when in need.

“I thank the Riley-Smith Hall for their hospitality and Radio Mojo for providing the music this afternoon.”

He added: “Disaster struck with the floods on Boxing Day, destroying businesses and residential properties and the collapse of the bridge a few days later.

“From Sunday December 27, the whole community, not only from Tadcaster, but from all over the country came to volunteer to help clear up and support the Town.

“Thanks go to everyone involved, individuals, Team Rubicon, The Salvation Army, the Emergency Services, Tadcaster Albion FC, Serve-On, Tadcaster Emergency Action Group and the Flood Action Group.

“I also take this opportunity to thank my colleagues, officers and staff at Selby District Council, Mayor of Tadcaster Coun Don Mackay, members and staff of Tadcaster Town Council, the Chairman of North Yorkshire County Council David Jeffels, members, officers and staff of NYCC and everybody who united to help Tadcaster to get back on its feet.

“I personally want to thank our MP Nigel Adams for his hard work and determination in securing visits by Ministers to our town and speaking with the Prime Minister.

“He supported us when the bridge collapsed; he was here in five minutes and helped to ensure the bridge was a national priority to be restored. I thank you Nigel.”

Mr Sweeting thanked everyone involved once again and said he hoped he had not missed anybody out, as all had played their part in some way.

He added: “It is now time to look forward and support each other to get Tadcaster back to normal.”
